Children’s Publishing

On Thursday 22 November, the Oxford Publishing Society (OpuS) held an event at Oxford Brookes University entitled ‘Children's Publishing: A success story'. The speakers were Catherine Clarke, literary agent at the Felicity Bryan Agency, Liz Cross, Children's Publisher at Oxford University Press, and Julia Golding, author of numerous children's books including The Diamond of Drury Lane. The event was chaired by Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies.

BBC Radio 4 Open Book

Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies lecturer Claire Squires featured on this week's BBC Radio 4 Open Book programme.

Claire discussed 'the dark arts of marketing' with presenter Mariella Frostrup and critic John Sutherland, which her new book Marketing Literature: The Making of Contemporary Writing in Britain analyses in detail.

The discussion is available from the BBC's website on Listen Again, approximately 13 minutes into the programme.

Chinese Institute of Publishing Science

On 6 November 2007 Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, was given the award of Honorary Researcher by the Chinese Institute of Publishing Science. He was presented with the award in Beijing by Xin Guangwei, Vice President of the Institute. On his visit to China, Angus met a number of Oxford Brookes alumni and spoke at the United Bible Societies Book Fair in Hong Kong.

Alex Goody Modernist Studies Association conference

Alex Goody (English) has presented a paper on the Baroness Elsa von Freytag Loringhoven at the Modernist Studies Association conference in Long Beach, California and is editing, with Catherine Morley (English) a volume entitled American Modernism: Cultural Transactions for publication in 2008. Frankfurt Book Fair visit 2007

Students from the MA Publishing courses at Oxford Brookes University visited the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2007. At the Fair they had meetings with a range of publishers large and small, including Random House, Orion, Usborne, A&C Black, Pearson Education, Infinite Ideas, Playbac, New Internationalist and Guardian Books. They also visited the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz.

Marketing Literature published

Claire Squires, Senior Lecturer in the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, has published a new book.

Marketing Literature: The Making of Contemporary Writing in Britain is a study of the publishing of contemporary writing in Britain. It analyses the changing social, economic and cultural environment of the publishing industry in the 1990s-2000s, and investigates its impact on genre, format, packaging, authorship and reading. It includes case studies of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting, Louis de Bernières's Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things and David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas, and significantly extends our understanding of the circulation of literary fiction in a period of notable change.

Ebooks on the BBC

Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, was interviewed on BBC Radio Oxford on Tuesday 16 October. He talked to Danny Cox about ebooks and the future of the book. The discussion covered the new ebook readers coming on to the market and the reasons for the continuing popularity of the printed book

Publications for a Healthier World

Yue Min, one of the MA in Publishing students at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, has been in Geneva this summer undertaking an internship at the World Health Organisation.  This is what she reports:

‘Everyone will be impressed and inspired by the WHO (World Health Organization) emblem at the first sight. So was I. I've been lucky to get the chance to do an internship in WHO Press this summer. What a beautiful thing to enjoy the fresh air and peaceful scenery in the green land of the UN area in Geneva every morning!
