New Delhi World Book Fair 2008

The 18th World Book Fair was held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 2 to 10 February 2008. There were more than 1300 exhibitors from 22 different countries, and the guest country was Russia.

The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, with support from UK Trade and Investment, led a delegation of ten UK companies on a trade mission to India to coincide with the Fair. Led by Adrian Bullock and Angus Phillips from the Centre, the mission first visited Chennai, where meetings were held with the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI). Moving on to Delhi, the publishers visited the World Book Fair and a networking reception was held at the High Commission.

The organizations taking part in the trade mission were Bertoli Mitchell, Bertrams Group, Moonlight Publishing, Myriad Editions, Neate Publishing, Nick Hern Books, Oxfam Publishing, Piccadilly Press, and Tottel Publishing.

The total book market in India was estimated at £1bn in 2003. There are nearly 16,000 publishers in India producing around 80,000 titles a year in all major Indian languages. Estimates of book production in English vary between 20 and 40 per cent of total output, and India is the third largest producer of new titles in English after the UK and USA (over 18,000 in 2004).
