Teaching Book History to Undergraduates

Representatives from the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies contributed to the one-day symposium on Teaching the History of the Book to Undergraduates at the Institute of English Studies at the University of London recently.

The symposium, which focused on how book history is taught at undergraduate level, featured Brookes student Ashley Hayden and Publishing staff member Claire Squires. Ashley spoke on a panel of students about her experience of being taught book history via the modules Print and Society and Fiction and the Culture of Publishing, as well as her dissertation work. Claire used the Fiction and the Culture of Publishing module as a case study to discuss the place of publishing history and the 'cultural' strand within the professionally-oriented BA in Publishing course.
