Visit to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair
Students from OICP visited the Bologna Children's Book Fair in the week of the 6 March 2023. La fiera del libro per ragazzi is the leading international fair for children's books. The students attended events and seminars and had a series of meetings with professionals, including OICP alumni, at their stands at the Fair. The companies represented included Abrams, Bloomsbury, Giunti, Hachette, HarperCollins, Nosy Crow, Oxford University Press, Sweet Cherry, and Usborne.

Article published on open access in monograph publishing
Philip Shaw, Angus Phillips, and Maria Bajo Gutiérrez from OICP have published a new article in Publishing Research Quarterly on open access in monograph publishing. The article uses evidence from an OICP survey in 2021 to investigate the state of the transition of monographs to Open Access publication. The paper highlights publishers’ opinions on the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic upon monograph publishing and on the future of the monograph, and the pressures and challenges faced by monograph publishers. The survey demonstrated clearly that most publishers see monograph publishing in the humanities and social sciences as being in transition, with Open Access expected to play a key part in the future.

Postgraduate bursary from Stationers’ Foundation
Postgraduate Bursary Scheme 2023
The Stationers' Foundation offers a Bursary each year to a postgraduate applicant who is holding an offer (conditional or unconditional) for the MA Publishing or MA Digital Publishing at OICP. The successful student will receive a bursary of up to £9,000 and every effort will be made to offer the opportunity to receive mentoring during their studies from an appropriate member of the Stationers’ Company, taking into account the specific interests of the student.

Industry scholarships for postgraduate entry
For applicants who have accepted a place to study on one of the Publishing Master’s programmes at OICP, the following scholarships are available:
- London Book Fair Scholarship 2023
- Princeton University Press Scholarship 2023
- FLTRP Scholarship 2023
The deadline for applications is Monday 5 June 2023. See below in the full news item for how to apply.
- Journalism Diversity Fund (JDF)
This awards bursaries to people from diverse backgrounds who need help funding their NCTJ journalism training. The deadline for applications for this cohort is on Wednesday 3 May 2023 at 5 pm. Further information about the JDF can be viewed here and any queries can be sent to Nikki Akinola at jdf@nctj.com If you are planning on studying on our MA Journalism, you can apply to the JDF for assistance with living expenses and/or travel costs (or other needs) while studying.

Celebrating 75 years of Indian publishing
A special issue of the journal Logos has been published to mark 75 years since Indian independence. India is the second-largest English-language book market in the world; there is also a flourishing of publishing in Indian languages. The issue has an amazing set of contributors: Nitasha Devasar (also the guest editor), Sesh Seshadri, Thomas Abraham, Christoph Chesher, Manzar Khan, Richard Charkin, Pramod Kapoor, Milinda De, Kumar Vikram, Jaya Bhattacharji Rose, and Smit Zaveri. The issue is free to access until the end of April. The journal’s Editor-in-Chief is Angus Phillips, Director of OICP.

International Student Scholarships
The International Student Scholarship scheme is available for September 2023 entry to our postgraduate programmes.
All International applicants for Publishing or Journalism programmes who have been made an offer and pay their deposit by the 15 April 2023, will be eligible to receive the £2,000 scholarship. There is no limit to the number of awards that can be made.

2022 British Book Design and Production Awards
The 2022 British Book Design & Production Awards took place at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London on Wednesday 18 January.
There were 101 beautiful books on this year’s shortlist across 17 categories, with Kingsbury Press’s Where Excellence is Elevated: 50 Hudson Yards stealing the spotlight and taking trophies for overall Book of the Year as well as its own category, Best British Book. Kingsbury Press also won an award in the Photographic Books category with Ocean Photography Awards. Another special mention goes to the Folio Society who were winners in four different categories. Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing, presented the award for Educational Books to Nosy Crow for The Tree Book. The judging for the awards took place at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing ahead of the gala evening.

Visit to Google HQ in London
Students from OICP, both undergraduate and postgraduate, visited Google HQ in London on Friday 4 November 2022. The visit was hosted by the Head of UK Publishers for Google, David McMurtrie, who is also on our Journalism Advisory Board. From OICP Alexandra Shakespeare and Sarah Franklin led the field trip.

Jane Potter discusses Wilfred Owen on BBC Radio 4
On Thursday 27 October 2022, Dr Jane Potter from OICP appeared on In Our Time, presented by Melvyn Bragg. The R4 programme discussed the celebrated British poet of World War One. Wilfred Owen (1893-1918). Owen had published only a handful of poems when he was killed a week before the end of the war, but in later decades he became seen as the essential British war poet. His works such as Anthem for Doomed Youth, Strange Meeting and Dulce et Decorum Est went on to be inseparable from the memory of the war and its futility. However, while Owen is best known for his poetry of the trenches, his letters offer a more nuanced insight into him such as his pride in being an officer in charge of others and in being a soldier who fought alongside his comrades.

Success in the Guardian University Guide
Programmes from the Oxford International Centre for Publishing score consistently high in the national league tables. In the 2023 Guardian University Guide we are ranked second in the table for Journalism. This follows a ranking of first in the 2020 Guide in the category Journalism, Publishing and Public Relations.
