British Book Design and Production Awards 2016
The British Book Design and Production Awards took place on Thursday 10 November 2016 at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in Knightsbridge in central London. The guest host for the evening was Baroness Floella Benjamin, best known in households across the country for her children’s programmes such as ‘Playschool’ and ‘CBeebies’ Bedtime Stories’. In 2013 Floella was made a Fellow of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and throughout 2016 has been promoting their Shakespeare in Schools initiative.
As one of the most prestigious and popular literary events of the year, the British Book Design and Production Awards recognize the excellence of the British book design and production industry by celebrating the year’s best books. The awards are designed to represent everything that is best in British book design and are seen as the flagship event in the industry’s year. The event is supported by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), Oxford Brookes University, and the Publishers Association.

Excellent results in the 2016 National Student Survey
The recent publication of the 2016 National Student Survey highlights the excellent standard of the publishing programmes at Oxford Brookes. The overall satisfaction figure was 90 per cent, and the figure for the quality of the teaching was 97 per cent satisfaction, with 100 per cent saying that the staff are good at explaining things to their students; 100 per cent thought that the staff have made the subject interesting; and 100 per cent thought that the staff are enthusiastic about what they are teaching.

Bloomsbury offers paid placement to Brookes Publishing graduate
Bloomsbury Academic & Professional Division is pleased to announce that they will be offering an Oxford Brookes Publishing graduate a 12 month paid placement in their Editorial and Digital departments. It is expected that the successful candidate will move into a full-time role within the division thereafter. Starting early September 2016, the role will involve assisting the Humanities Editorial teams on the Philosophy, Linguistics, Classics and Religious Studies lists for the first six months. The final six months will be based with the Digital Publishing team, working with them on the development of a new digital product. This is a valuable opportunity to learn about the workings of a busy Editorial department, acquire relevant skills first hand and gain experience in digital publishing.
This offer will also be available to students graduating in 2017.

Wiley Scholarship 2016
We are delighted to announce a new scholarship for MA students studying publishing at Oxford Brookes University. Wiley is offering a fee-waiver bursary of £1,000 to a full-time or part-time student at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies on the MA in Publishing or MA in Digital Publishing. The student will also receive the guarantee of a work placement for a minimum of three weeks at Wiley in Oxford. The scholarship is for entry in September 2016.

PA releases new market report on UK
Nine years since it published the last market report on the UK, the Publishers Association has released a new full market report on the UK.
Written by Paul Richardson and Graham Taylor, authors of the ever popular PA Guide to the UK Publishing Industry, this 174-page report is a unique analysis of the UK publishing market. It includes an article on Publishing Education by Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies.

Publishing programmes awarded Creative Skillset tick

The Creative Skillset Tick is an invaluable signpost for potential students and employers to indicate those programmes that provide the most up-to-date and relevant education. Creative Skillset is recognized in the Unistats Key Information Sets, which demonstrates the value of the accreditation to potential students comparing courses online. For employers, the Tick signposts them to graduates from creative courses that have proven links with industry and teach professional skills.

The British Book Design and Production Awards took place on 26 November 2015 at a lavish new location – the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in Knightsbridge in central London. The guest host for the evening was comedian, Mark Watson, one of the leading live performers in the UK, known for his appearances on Have I Got News for You and Mock the Week. Watson himself is no stranger to publishing written material, including a semi-autobiographical book and several novels.

James Daunt talks at OICPS
This piece on the talk given at Oxford Brookes on 6 October 2015 by James Daunt, the MD of Waterstones, is written by Andri Nel, a MA Digital Publishing student originally from South Africa. She loves blogging on her blog The Loud Library, has an extreme case of wanderlust and is passionate about cultivating a better reading culture for children through a venture called KliekClick.

Further success in University rankings
The recently published (May 2015) university league table from the Guardian ranks Publishing at Oxford Brookes at number two out of 57 universities in the category Journalism, Publishing and Public Relations. This repeats the success from 2014, when Publishing was ranked at number two out of 58 universities in the same category.
