Tweet smell of success – London Book Fair 2011
The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies was widely represented at the 2011 London Book Fair. Our students assisted the LBF with organizing seminars during the fair itself, and we also ran three extremely well-attended seminars on a wide variety of topics chaired by academics from the Centre, including one on social media – The Tweet Smell of Success? Over 150 people were turned away from the event, unable to get in the room. The seminars are available as part of our podcast series.

Philip Pullman and Colin Dexter launch Oxford bid to become UNESCO World Book Capital
Oxford has formally launched a bid to become UNESCO World Book Capital in 2014. Since 2001 UNESCO has nominated a World Book Capital City to acknowledge the best year-long programme proposed by a city to promote books and foster reading. Successful programmes involve cooperation with local, national and international professional organizations representing writers, publishers, booksellers and librarians as well as communities and groups which encourage and promote reading. Oxford and its surrounding county of Oxfordshire have unparalleled resources and world renowned publishing and bookselling enterprises in place to support a programme of this kind, and there are probably more major, culturally diverse, authors based in or around Oxford than in any comparable city in the world.

OICPS at the 2010 London Book Fair
The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies was widely represented at the 2010 London Book Fair. Our students assisted the LBF with organising seminars during the fair itself, and we also ran four extremely well-attended seminars on a wide variety of topics chaired by academics from the Centre, including one on the “Mid-list crisis” which featured in the Bookseller.com the following day. We also held a very lively and well-attended reception at our booth on the Tuesday evening. Despite the lower attendance figures, traffic to the OICPS booth was steady, and there was lots of interest in our MA in Publishing, our Certificate in Journals Publishing, and our bespoke training and consultancy work.

London Book Fair training!
In November 2009 OICPS led 3-day workshop helping to prepare participants for the London Book Fair.
The 3-day workshop, organised by the British Council and London Book Fair, fulfilled the aims of the participants in preparing them to make the most of the real opportunities provided for Market Focus organisations. As Market Focus status provides a dedicated pavilion within the fair space, together with a seminar programme devoted to their publishing, it is imperative that all the publishers attending are ready for the experience, whatever their goals. Through a mixture of interactive lectures, case studies, pair and group work, activities and presentations, all 16 delegates were offered the opportunity of learning more about topics such as the present publishing and bookselling scene, buying and selling rights, marketing themselves and their titles before, during, and after LBF.
