The Successful Publishing Fusion Workshop
The Publishing Fusion Workshop was run in early January by the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, supported by Creative Skillset. The Workshop took place in Oxford when the city was flooded, roads were closed and travelling times were twice what they should have been. Not an auspicious start to the three days! And yet the Workshop became a place of genuine excitement and creativity. The Workshop was focused on how publishing needs everyone to have creative, digital and entrepreneurial skills and that whilst many people going into the industry have one or two of these, few have all three. The idea was to develop delegates' skills in a way that would allow them to think about their work in new ways and take back practical ideas to their work place.
Inspiration and invention was the name of the game!

Date for next International Publishing Summer School 2014
After the success of our first International Publishing Summer School in July 2013, we are now able to announce the date of the 2014 conference. This will take place from 7th-18th July 2014, once again in the splendid surroundings of Headington Hill Hall at Oxford Brookes University.
We had uniformly enthusiastic feedback from last year's delegates and we expect the 2014 Summer School to be just as good, with participants from all round the world, and a stellar line up of lecturers from OICPS and industry. As well as hearing about real-life cases studies, there will the opportunity to learn from hands-on exercises and workshops, and to join in some interesting industry visits.
Accommodation is en-suite and all meals are included in the package (other than during the middle weekend when you are free to make your own plans). There will also be a conference dinner with an after-dinner speaker in the second week.
In order to ensure that delegates get the most possible out of the Summer School, we restrict the numbers to just 20 places, and we anticipate that these will sell out quickly, so if you would like to reserve a place, please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

London Book Fair 2013
Students and staff from the Centre (OICPS) were busy throughout the London Book Fair, held at Earls Court from the 15th to 17th April 2013. We had our own stand from which we marketed our degree programmes, staff publications, research and consultancy, and our July summer school. Over 40 students helped out with the running of the Fair, including manning the seminar rooms, the literary café, and the translation centre; and two students helped on the Frankfurt Book Fair stand.

London Book Fair 2012
Students and staff from the Centre were busy throughout the London Book Fair, held at Earls Court in April 2012. As in previous years, we had our own stand from which we marketed our degree programmes and consultancy. Students helped out with the running of the Fair, including manning the seminar rooms. They also distributed leaflets about the Centre and Oxford’s bid to become World Book Capital in 2014. We ran three well-attended seminars on social media, children’s publishing, and the greening of books. At our reception on the Tuesday afternoon, attended by over 100 people, we marked the forthcoming publication of Adrian Bullock’s Book Production (Routledge) with a cake in his honour.

2nd UK China Publishing Forum
The second UK China Publishing Forum was held on Friday 13 April at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, Oxford Brookes University. The event was an opportunity to hear from both UK and Chinese experts about the relationship between the two publishing industries. There were sessions on co-publishing ventures, the development of the copyright trade, and digital publishing in China. A panel session discussed the cultural deficit between the two countries, and the implications for the translation of Chinese works including contemporary literature. It is hoped that some articles based on the conference will be published in the journal Logos.

Sino-UK Publishing Forum at Peking University
In partnership with Peking University, the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies (OICPS) recently held a forum on the copyright trade between the UK and China. Held on the 29 August at Peking University in Beijing, the forum brought together a range of speakers and participants from both industry and academia.
From OICPS Angus Phillips and Adrian Bullock both gave presentations. Adrian Bullock presented the results of his recent research into the copyright trade, and showed that the trade gap is narrowing with more Chinese titles being sold into the UK. In 2003-04 the ratio of Chinese imports of copyrights to exports was 15:1; In 2010 it was nearer to 5:1. Overall UK publishers are still disappointed by the size of the Chinese market, in terms of the often modest print runs and low local prices. Although STM, ELT, and children’s publishing are all doing well, China is still outside the top twenty markets for British publishers, and accounts for less than 2 per cent of export revenues.
Amongst the speakers at the forum were Professor Xiao Dongfa from Peking University, Nie Zhen Ning, President of China Publishing Group, and Jackie Huang, a Brookes alumna now working for the Andrew Nurnberg agency in Beijing. The next forum will be held in Oxford in April 2012
