Announcing the launch of the 2010 Certificate in Journals Publishing

The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies in association with The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) announce the successful launch of the 2010 Certificate in Journals Publishing.  This professional development course – aimed at those in the early stages of their career – kicked off on February 11th with a welcome lunch for the nine industry students who have enrolled for 2010.

The Certificate offers students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of journals publishing and gain a professional qualification recognised by ALPSP from Oxford Brookes University. Successful students also gain credits towards a Masters degree at Oxford Brookes.

Sarah Cunningham, a 2009 Certificate in Journals Publishing student, commented “I found the taught part of the course immensely useful. It has given me a much more in-depth understanding of the journals publishing industry and the issues surrounding journals publishing”.

The Certificate provides students with a deeper understanding of the current issues, practices and techniques in journals publishing, including open access, institutional repositories, new business models, and the wider political, academic and economic context. The course also gives students currently working in the publishing industry excellent opportunities for networking

The programme is led by Steve Ball, Senior Lecturer and Field Chair in Publishing, who researches key issues in academic publishing including journal publishing and scholarly communication, editorial functions and the interplay between publishing and politics. He is the author of the forthcoming book Inside Journal Publishing (Routledge, 2012).
