Copyright Masterclass

Please note the new date.

Simon Littlewood, Joss Saunders, Beverley Tarquini

Taking Place: Four Pillars Hotel, Oxford

Copyright, the bedrock of the publishing industry and of authors’ livelihoods, has never been more under threat in the modern era, and questions are being asked in a range of jurisdictions about whether current frameworks are fit for purpose. Change is already under way, and further change is inevitable. The issues surrounding copyright have never been more complicated and keeping abreast of the latest developments is a challenge for everyone in publishing.  At a moment when the new European Commission has ordered a comprehensive review of copyright, this new course addresses that challenge not only from a legal and editorial but also from a commercial point of view, reminding us that copyright and its future are the concern of everyone in the industry.

To reflect this range of perspectives, it will be taught by Joss Saunders, a pre-eminent copyright lawyer, Simon Littlewood, a leading industry practitioner, and Beverley Tarquini, Senior Lecturer at OICPS.

Public Lecture by Leander Reeves

Our long love affair with magazines: portraying confidence from the 18th century to the present day

Public lecture by Leander Reeves, Senior Lecturer in Publishing

Taking Place: JHB Lecture Theatre, John Henry Brookes Building, Headington Campus

Magazines act as the ultimate social barometer, cataloguing our insecurities, dreams and manners. Confidence comes in many guises - beauty, power, sex, body, social standing - which depend as much on social hierarchy as the time period it lives in. Intertwined with fashion, it is as much of a social barometer of society as the magazines in which it is illustrated.

Faith, hope, gender and societal pressures help shape our relationship with confidence - a relationship often mediated by magazines for commercial and editorial gain. But where does confidence come from? And who grants it?

This lecture aims to unravel some of these relationships, hierarchies and codes.

Will Bookshops Exist in 100 Years’ Time?

A panel discussion taking place at Blackwell's Bookshop in Broad Street, Oxford

19:00 - 20:00

Taking Place: Blackwell's, Broad Street, Oxford

The death of the book has been prophesised since the days of monks diligently making copies of books for a wider readership. In more recent times, the Internet, e-readers and supposedly shorter attention spans have all been cited as factors which predicate the certain demise of books and reading and therefore bookshops themselves. Join our fabulous and illustrious panelists as they discuss whether the book-lovers of 2114 will be able to walk into a bookshop (or indeed, whether there will even be book-lovers in a century's time).

The line-up of participants include: Jen Campbell, author and bookseller, whose new book, The Bookshop Book, looks at over two hundred wonderful bookshops across six continents; Mark Forsyth, the author of Horlogicon and Etymologicon, whose latest work, The Unknown, Unknown explores why it's only in a bookshop that you'll find something you never knew you wanted to read; Ulric van den Bogaerde, the Manager of the world-famous Norrington Room, the vast academic basement of Blackwell's Bookshop in Oxford which has served generations of students and scholars; Angus Phillips, Director, Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies and the author of Turning the Page: The evolution of the book (Routledge, 2014); Juliet Mabey, co-founder and Director of Oneworld Books, Monty Kimball-Evans, Higher Education Sales Executive at Taylor and Francis & former Blackwell's bookseller; and Andy Miller, author of The Year of Reading Dangerously.
