Improving accessibility at Pearson
by Egle Juzenaite
Hi, I'm Egle! I am an MA Publishing (distance learning) student and also a fabulous International Qualifications Product Developer at Pearson Education. My role requires me to research and develop international GCSE and A-level qualifications for learners all around the world. I work on specifications and sample assessment materials and you may wonder how does that relate to publishing? Actually, it relates a lot! I work on writing, amending and typesetting a bunch of documents, including teacher's guides, student guides and learning materials.

Working with the Turkish International Publishing Association
by Jill Çakmak
After volunteering at the London Book Fair in April 2022, I made some contacts at the Turkish Publishing Association, which invited me to Istanbul to work with them for three weeks in June.
I am currently studying on the BA in Media, Journalism and Publishing and this will be my third year starting this September. I had gained some relevant experience before but never had a chance to work so closely with the publishing industry.

Brazil’s biggest book fair: Bienal do Livro São Paulo 2022
by Veronica Ferrari
I’m working on my summer semester module Culture of Publishing on the MA Publishing via distance learning, but I couldn’t miss the chance to spend a day at the São Paulo Bienal do Livro, Brazil’s largest book fair, which took place from 02 to 10 July. The fair usually happens every two years, but because of the pandemic there hadn’t been one since 2018 (before I moved here) so I was really keen to go and have a look.

Presenting at my first publishing conference

After a three-year break due to the pandemic, the By the Book conference returned for the seventh time between 20 and 21 June 2022 at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Paris Nord. This year’s theme was ‘Publishing in the 21st Century’. As I am currently researching, writing, and creating the major project for my MA in Digital Publishing at Brookes, I had the opportunity to attend the conference and present an academic poster to delegates.

Oxdam Book Fair
by Polly Silk
In partnership with the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), OICP ran the first ever in-person Oxdam Book Fair at the end of March 2022. Second-year Media, Journalism and Publishing students from Oxford Brookes spent 2 days with their AUAS counterparts participating in this event, designed to resemble a major book fair. Working together in teams, students held strategy meetings, pitched their titles, engaged in networking activities, and secured rights deals – competing against the rest of their class to secure the biggest sales.

Jenter på do or Girls in the bathroom
by Helene Jelsø Spanthus
Helene Jelsø Spanthus was an MA Publishing Media student at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing from 2019 to 2020. When she went back to Norway after Covid-19 hit, she was employed as a summer intern at Gyldendal Publishing. Due to some unforeseen challenges they needed help throughout 2020, so she stayed on, and in January 2021 was hired on a one-year contract as Head of PR and Marketing at the imprint Tiden Norsk Forlag. This is where the amazing project of Girls in the bathroom took place.

Crossover Covers - YA All Grown Up
by Yasminn Brown
Books covers today need to be 'attention-grabbing' (Violet Bramley, 2021) but they also need to signpost to the potential reader 'hey, I'm for you!'. In this blog post, alumni Yasminn Brown shines a light on the design choices made in the rejacketing of YA books for the adult market. There is of course a cost to rejacketing a title so publishers tend to do this only when they are sure the work has a significant crossover appeal and thus warrants the extra spend. Yasminn has hunted down some interesting contemporary examples of bestselling YA worthy of a new look.
