Working with the Turkish International Publishing Association

by Jill Çakmak

After volunteering at the London Book Fair in April 2022, I made some contacts at the Turkish Publishing Association, which invited me to Istanbul to work with them for three weeks in June.

I am currently studying on the BA in Media, Journalism and Publishing and this will be my third year starting this September. I had gained some relevant experience before but never had a chance to work so closely with the publishing industry.

The course has equipped me with several skills that I could use during my internship. My tasks included digital marketing including social media analysis and research. After the three weeks of work experience, I handed in a report to support the organization with its digital marketing. I realized quickly how busy the publishing industry is and at what speed it develops. My co-workers were glad that I could support them and I was happy to help while learning some Turkish. As an association, they have many tasks to cover, and no office day is the same. Since Covid many publishers have adopted hybrid working, which means that not every worker will be in the office at the same time. Yet the organization managed fantastically and the communication flow was amazing even though not everyone was present physically.

The impact of social media within the publishing business became very real to me, and I am glad how many practical skills our course has taught me - and I am not even finished yet! After diving into the real world for the first time, I feel more confident in my skills and my working ability.

Thank you yet again to the Team of Türkîye Yayincilar Bîrlîgî.
