OICPS at the London Book Fair 2015

Students and staff from the Centre (OICPS) were busy throughout the London Book Fair, held at Olympia from the 14th to 16th April 2015.

We had our own stand from which we marketed our degree programmes, staff publications, research and consultancy, the June conference of the Oxfordshire Publishing Group, and our July summer school. Over 40 students helped out with the running of the Fair, including manning the seminar rooms and the Author’s Hub; and two students helped on the Frankfurt Book Fair stand.

On the Thursday afternoon Angus Phillips participated in a seminar, ‘Fusion Skills for a Future in Publishing’, on how the fusion of creative, technical and entrepreneurial skills is key to the continued success of UK publishing and the wider creative industries.

In April 2015 eighteen students from the Master’s in Publishing programmes visited the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. They had appointments with publishers at the Fair and were able to enjoy the atmosphere of the pre-eminent rights fair in children’s publishing.

Kelsi Farrington writes about her experience of presenting her project proposal at the Digital Café:

‘On Wednesday the 1st of April, at this year's Bologna Children's Book Fair, I presented my Major Project proposal in front of a larger-than-anticipated crowd at the Digital Café - an experience I won't forget any time soon. My idea, to create a collection of fact-based, illustrated ebooks for children in developing countries, was inspired by my 5-month internship at Oxfam International, publishing Open Access research papers from global affiliates, and the combination of my chosen modules at Brookes: Children's Publishing, International Publishing Management and Digital Publishing Strategy. …

Bookseller article on Macmillan and Springer merger

The Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, Angus Phillips, was interviewed for an article in The Bookseller on the merger between Macmillan and Springer.

‘The merger makes sense,’ said Angus Phillips, director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies at Oxford Brookes University. ‘It creates a diverse portfolio: Macmillan has the international schools business and Palgrave, which broadens Springer more generally. Springer has a big range of journals, and adding a heavy-hitting brand like Nature in there will be good for an IPO. If the future is about not just content but solutions, a larger company can invest in that and make a stronger offer to professionals.’

http://unbound.co.uk/books/reptile-resistance

The project was launched on the site by C. M. Taylor - the pen-name of OICPS associate staff member Craig Taylor - and by John Crump. It uses written text, game play and video to tell its satirical tale. Neither book, computer game, nor film, but something between all three, Reptile Resistance is, according to its author/developers: ‘an experiment in narrative art.’
