Publishing MA students Succeed in Pearson-judged Digital Pitch

On the 1st of May 2019, we invited product managers Alistair Nunn and Sze-Kie Ho from Pearson Education to judge the final presentations of our MA Publishing Media students taking the module, Digital Publishing Strategy. Eight weeks earlier, student groups were given a real Pearson user problem, and tasked with developing and testing an app or website that aims to solve this problem, while being a profitable investment for Pearson.

Over those eight weeks, groups conducted user interviews with real teachers, brainstormed potential solutions with pen and paper, prototyped these ideas as functioning apps, and conducted one-to-one user testing. This culminated in a ‘Dragons Den’ style pitch, presenting the team’s research and resulting product.

OICP at the London Book Fair 2019

Students and staff from the Centre (OICP) were busy throughout the London Book Fair (LBF), held at Olympia from the 12th to 14th March 2019. We had our own stand from which we marketed our degree programmes, staff publications, research and consultancy, and various events including our training programmes. Over 50 of our students helped out with the running of the Fair, both in the seminar rooms and at the special forums, including the Author HQ, Poets’ Corner, Children’s Hub, English PEN Literary Salon, and Buzz Theatre.

At our stand reception on the Wednesday evening, attended by 160 people, we met up with friends of the Centre and alumni working at the fair. Pictures of the party cake, which had a design celebrating the forthcoming publication of The Oxford Handbook of Publishing (edited by Angus Phillips and Michael Bhaskar), were tweeted round the fair before it was eaten by the guests.

C. M. Taylor is an associate lecturer at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing. His new novel, Staying Onwas published by Duckworth on 18th October 2018. Set amongst the Brexit-plagued British expats on the Costa Blanca, the book is a tragi-comic geriatric coming-of-age story and a deep, loving portrait of the English working class.

The process of writing the novel was documented by the digital curation team at the British Library, who installed software on Craig's computer to record every single keystroke during the writing process. More about this process can be found here
