Professor of French wins Research Leave Award

Professor Seán Hand of the Department of Modern Languages has been successful in the AHRB’s Research Leave Scheme. The award will allow him to complete a book on Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995), the Lithuanian-born French philosopher whose ethics engaged with both phenomenology and a specific Judaic heritage. The project will situate the full range of Levinas’ writings in their intellectual, political and aesthetic contexts, and demonstrate their influence on subsequent theorising, teaching and practice across a wide range of disciplines.

British Council International Young Publisher of the Year

OICPS is involved in a number of events surrounding the International Young Publisher of the Year initiative. Ten young publishers from ten countries are competing for the title and the opportunity to develop their career through international dialogue and exchange. Ten of our current MA students, who have worked in publishing in a number of countries, will meet the candiadtes at an informal reception held prior to the London Book Fair and we hope that there will be further opportunities for our students to meet the candidates. Sue Pandit has also been invited to a lunch meeting between the candidates and senior members of the UK publishing industry and the Centre will also be represented at the presentation of the award at the Fair.

Working in Publishing Day

On Wednesday 23 February we held our annual Working in Publishing Day for all our MA Publishing and final year undergraduate publishing students. Representatives from 18 publishing companies attended, ranging from Macmillan and HarperCollins to Oxfam and Berg Publishing. Students had the opportunity to question panels of alumni and recruitment consultants and to meet in small groups with a number of specific publishers. The day finished with an informal drinks reception for all. We are very grateful to the wonderful support that the publishing industry provides for this event. More Photos here
