London Book Fair training!

In November 2009 OICPS led 3-day workshop helping to prepare participants for the London Book Fair.

The 3-day workshop, organised by the British Council and London Book Fair, fulfilled the aims of the participants in preparing them to make the most of the real opportunities provided for Market Focus organisations. As Market Focus status provides a dedicated pavilion within the fair space, together with a seminar programme devoted to their publishing, it is imperative that all the publishers attending are ready for the experience, whatever their goals. Through a mixture of interactive lectures, case studies, pair and group work, activities and presentations, all 16 delegates were offered the opportunity of learning more about topics such as the present publishing and bookselling scene, buying and selling rights, marketing themselves and their titles before, during, and after LBF.

Launch of Lion Lounge Press

Leon Terner, who studied on the MA Publishing in 2009, writes about the new publishing venture he has started with two classmates:

For my major project on the MA Publishing, I chose to found a small Indie press and publish an anthology of European creative writing. Contacting Creative Writing MAs and other artistic forums around Europe, I then solicited creative works of nearly any kind, as long as it was somehow connected to Europe. My mission statement, if I can call it that, was - and is still - to give everyone an equal opportunity to be published, given that creative zeal and literary brilliance were evidenced. Both previously undiscovered authors and well-established ones were welcome to submit their work, and before long I had received tons of great short stories and poems.

To cut a long story short, in August of 2009, Lion Lounge Press, as I dubbed my publishing venture, published its very first book, The Lounge Companion: A Collection of European Creative Writing.

MA Publishing students visit the Frankfurt Book Fair

MA Publishing student Rosanne Dawkins writes about the visit by 35 students to the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2009. Accompanying the piece are two photos taken at the Fair by fellow students Juliette Boulouis and Brianna Corbett.

Wide eyed and full of questions, a group of travel-wearied Masters students embarked on what was to be their first true taste of the cut and thrust business world of publishing.

The Frankfurt Buchmesse is one of the most important dates in a publisher’s calendar with more than 7,300 exhibitors from 100 countries, 299,000 visitors and over 10,000 journalists. It not only offered us a unique insight into the practical usage of publishing skills but also the opportunity to talk to those in the industry.
