OXDOX and publishing

OXDOX is an international documentary film festival that started in Oxford in 2002, and takes place at the end of April each year. The venues for the 2010 OXDOX Festival were Europe's oldest museum, the Ashmolean, and Europe's oldest cinema, The Ultimate Picture Palace.

Two Oxford Brookes undergraduate students, Lizzie Toole (Publishing) and Sarah Giblett (Multimedia Production), worked this year on a new layout for the programme and a new logo for the festival. The festival’s Director, Marie Wright, writes: ‘We really appreciate being able to work with your students and hope that this will be the start of a continuing association. The inclusion of students from the Oxford Brookes Publishing degree into our festival team has been a really positive experience.   We have incorporated many of their innovative design ideas into our programmes and have been so impressed with their professional approach.’

Sarah writes about their work with OXDOX: ‘The experience has been fantastic and Marie was a pleasure to work for! We met up weekly to discuss progress and ideas. The task was to design the layout for the front and back cover for the festival's programme. These would then also be used to create the posters and leaflets for distribution. I obtained stills and photographs of some of the films involved and of the festival's screening locations. I then incorporated these into the design and layout. Lizzie completely redesigned the logo, as previous designs did not reflect the character of OXDOX. The new design is more flexible: as well as the full name, abbreviation and tag line ('Documenting the real world'), the dates have also been included. These can then be altered for subsequent years.
