The Book Fair, which concentrates on the children's and young adults' market sectors, also has an emphasis on illustration.

During the trip, students from the MA in Publishing had the opportunity to make contacts with professionals in the children's book world both from the UK and abroad.  Students had meetings with the literary agent Catherine Clarke; the film and TV scout Fiona Kenshole; children's books editor of the Guardian newspaper, Julia Eccleshare; Elizabeth Wright of Usborne; Alyx Price, group publicity director of Scholastic; Robert Seath of Lion Hudson; and Eirin Hagen of the Hagen Agency in Norway.

Students also met with graduates from the Oxford Brookes Publishing courses who were attending the Fair, including Helen Norris (now at Usborne) and Ed Glover (who has his own company Transedition/Camelot).  One of the current students, Sam Hutchinson, was working at the B Small stand during the Fair.

Police visit Publishing!

Today, the Publishing Department was visited by two police officers from Thames Valley Police.

The crime?

Trying to write a detective novel...

The two officers were invited to speak to students on the first year undergraduate module Authorship and Creative Writing.  Students in the class are set the assignment of writing the opening chapter of a crime novel, and then thinking about how to get their work published.

The two police officers told the students about procedure when answering 999 calls, entering a crime scene, finding dead bodies, detection and investigation and giving evidence in court, as well as painting a picture of the life of the police both on and off-duty.  Students asked questions relating to their writing projects, to help their work be as authentic as possible.

Other visiting speakers on the module include Carolyn Caughey, an editor who commissions crime writing at Hodder Headline publishers, and the crime novelist Veronica Stallwood, whose series of Kate Ivory books are set in Oxford.
