MA Publishing Students in LOGOS

A group of master's students from the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies visited the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2007 and their impressions of the event have recently been published in LOGOS, the forum of the world book community. The full article can be found here but the following quotes offer a snapshot of the students' experiences.

Victoria Harben

‘Frankfurt opened my eyes to the magnitude of the book publishing realm. Original thoughts of rickety lemonade-type stands were dashed as soon as I saw the impressive booths lining the main halls.'

Helen Swain

‘The organization that such a monster of complexity requires is mind-boggling, but what is really exciting is the electric atmosphere, humming with the discussions of innumerable small groups. This is where vital contacts are made and maintained, and where the most breathlessly competitive business in worldwide book rights is transacted.'

Chris Boor

‘The importance of networking in publishing had been drummed into me from day one in our course, but it was not until the fair that the lesson really struck a chord. Browsing can only get you so far and, almost to my surprise, most people were actually happy to talk to me.'

Amy Wigelsworth

‘While the definition is so obvious, it is easy to overlook: publishing is about "making public" and this was evident in spades at Frankfurt. Blads, catalogues and newsletters laden with marketing copy; foreign rights for sale to the highest bidder; networking, networking, networking (and wine!). Frankfurt is a dynamic commercial crossroads if ever there was one and it roused any snoozing students among us into action.'
