Brookes Modern Languages Initiative expected to feed into international collaboration

A one-day interdisciplinary workshop took place at Brookes on 12th June 2008 entitled ‘Urban Spaces: Cultural Dynamics in the modern Metropolis'. Organised by Dr Christina Horvath and Dr Dervila Cooke (French), the event was funded by the Institute of Historical and Cultural Research and the British Academy. The overarching aim of the initiative was to promote progressive urban research across disciplines in the urban arena. The workshop attracted researchers from Belgium, France, Austria, Norway, Denmark, Finland and various institutions across UK.

The delegates presented their research on architecture, urban writing, photography, film and governance and discussed the possibility of a broader international collaboration in the area of urban research with the participation of Brookes researchers from various disciplines. As a short-term outcome of the event, Dr Christina Horvath is currently designing a co-ordinated strategy determining the role and degree of involvement of each partner for the forthcoming years. Applications for substantial funding are expected to enable members of the future network to cement the international links developed and hold planning meetings to draft collaborative research plans.
