Personal Profile

He completed his MA in Book History & Publishing Culture at Oxford Brookes University in 2012 and received his PhD (from Oxford Brookes University again!) in January 2020. Since 2018 he has been an Associate Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University where he’s been teaching various publishing and book history modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Jonathan lives just outside of Oxford and in his spare time (such as it is), he’s the co-Editor of Oxfordshire-based folk, roots, and acoustic music magazine Shire Folk (http://www.shirefolk.org.uk). When he’s not doing those things, you’ll find him at a gig or feet up with a good book and a cup of tea

Research

Jonathan has over 25 years’ experience in academic publishing across a range of products such as journals, textbooks, MRWs, and databases, and in a variety of roles including marketing, editorial, production, and sales. He is currently Senior Manager at academic publishers Wiley where he’s based within the partner engagement team focusing on Wiley’s relationship with its society partners. Prior to that he was Senior Marketing Manager at Palgrave Macmillan, and for 10 years he was Director of Marketing at Taylor & Francis.

Jonathan’s main teaching and research interests are in book history and publishing history from the early 20th century to the present day. His particular interest is in left-wing publishing, especially from the 1930s, which is reflected in his thesis Balancing politics and publishing: Victor Gollancz and the publishing revolution of the 1930s

In his role at Wiley, he has also researched extensively into relationships between academic societies and publishing companies, which remains an ongoing subject of study.
