Marysia Nowak
Associate Lecturer in Journalism
Personal Profile
At BBC news, Marysia has produced and reported, presented and edited programmes, travelling around the world to cover major geopolitical developments. But her passion lies in the art of storytelling and content creation, which she delights in passing on to a new generation of journalists.
Alongside senior newsroom roles, she has been actively involved in developing journalistic standards, particularly in the areas of disinformation and factchecking. She worked with the BBC Academy to train new recruits in core journalistic skills and helped deliver the BBC’s first major news verification campaign. With PA News, she has also supported local Newsquest journalists across the UK in identifying and debunking disinformation.
When she is not teaching at Oxford Brookes University, she runs a media training and communications consultancy.
Marysia holds a master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Leicester and completed her undergraduate studies in English Language at the University of Amsterdam. She began her career at the BBC as a Studio Manager, for a time creating sound effects in radio drama such as stirring cups of tea and slamming doors, notably for Dame Judi Dench, which remains her favourite job to date.
Marysia has more than 30 years’ experience in journalism, working across radio, television and online media. Until recently, she was Assistant Editor at BBC World News, leading teams on major breaking news stories such as the Manchester Arena bombing, the invasion of Ukraine and the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
She now teaches Journalism and Technology, Essential Journalism, and Media Law and Ethics at Oxford Brookes University, bringing a strong focus on storytelling and video.
