Personal Profile

While on staff at the Guardian he launched a website section focused on healthcare professionals and developed his use of data in journalism. He has worked as a freelancer since 2014 with clients including the Society for Innovation, Technology and Modernisation (Socitm), a professional membership organisation for local public sector organisations. In 2022 he was part of the first cohort of the Oxford Climate Journalism Network run by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford.

Steven is a journalist and editor who writes under the byline SA Mathieson about computing, government, healthcare, climate and energy for publications including Computer Weekly, Public Technology and the Register.

As the Chief Examiner on data journalism for the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), Steven oversees elements of OICP's NCTJ accreditation delivery, teaching on digital and data journalism and research modules. At the Bauer Academy, he teaches apprentice journalists, and also runs training on working as a freelancer for the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).
