Personal Profile

Malcolm started teaching in Higher Education in 2008 and has balanced teaching and industry since, spending spells as a communication manager in the charity sector and freelancing as a journalist. He has created new undergraduate and postgraduate courses and managed accreditation with professional bodies.

Prior to that, Malcolm trained as a journalist in 1997 after studying English Literature as an undergraduate. He spent the early part of his career on regional newspapers as a reporter and then crime reporter before a spell as a reporter on ‘the nationals’ with The Daily Mail. He then returned to regional newspapers as news editor for the Oxford Mail and Oxford Times before seeing the potential in the internet and becoming Digital Content Manager for Newsquest Oxfordshire.

As a former regional news reporter and national news editor, Malcolm teaches news skills across our UG and PG programmes and ensures the smooth running of our MA Journalism. His main interests are crime and law reporting, the relationship between journalism and public relations, and technological changes that influence directions within the industry.
