With the growth in the use of tablets to consume media, including books, what is happening to the boundaries between books and games? There are now books of games, and games of books – what, for example, do we call an interactive children’s product, and does it matter? An expert panel from publishing and the games industry examines a range of topics including our continuing need for exciting stories on which games can be developed, and how publishers are looking to develop a digital strategy across media platforms.

The seminar was  chaired by Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies. His books include Inside Book Publishing (with Giles Clark) and the forthcoming Turning the Page: The evolution of the book. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the publishing journal Logos. He has degrees from Oxford and Warwick universities and before joining Oxford Brookes he ran a trade and reference list at Oxford University Press. He is a judge for the 2013 Bookseller industry awards.

Nathan Hull is Penguin's Digital Product Development Director across both the adult and children’s division. He is responsible for Penguin’s award-winning and innovative digital portfolio including apps, audio, AV, APIs and all variations of ebooks – working with such high-profile authors and brands as Jamie Oliver, Stephen Fry, Moshi Monsters and Roald Dahl. He also leads digital strategy on new routes to market, new business models and anti-piracy initiatives. He joined Penguin from Universal Music where he oversaw digital strategy for major artists including U2, The Rolling Stones, The Killers and Take That and handled Universal’s relationships with key digital partners including iTunes, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, BT and Sky. He was instrumental in shaping the company’s strategy for streaming, subscriptions, apps, virtual merchandise and anti-piracy and launched Spotify as well as negotiating deals with Shazam, eBay, Xbox and PS3.

Simon Meek is creative director at The Story Mechanics, the interactive storytelling arm of Tern Television Productions. He has been responsible for a variety of digital projects, including Slabovia.tv for Channel 4, The Beauty of Maps for BBC, and The Story Mechanics' digital adaptation of The Thirty-Nine Steps. Prior to working in interactive entertainment and games, Simon was a journalist and TV development producer.

Becky Degler is Web Publishing Manager at John Wiley & Sons. She has worked as a website product manager for Wiley’s publishing partners, mainly focusing on academic societies. Prior to her work in publishing, she completed a PhD in literature at the University of Essex. She’s been a gamer since the early 1980s when she was introduced to her first Atari, and is delighted that logging all those hours of gaming is transferable to her work with academic communities.
