Alumni - Susan Furber, MA Publishing

After spending a year in England during my undergraduate degree, I decided to move to the UK and do an MA in Publishing at Oxford Brookes University from 2014 to 2015. During the programme, I learned what I have since found to be true over and over again: publishing is a business based on relationships.

My previous roles include Editorial Assistant for the Arden Shakespeare and Methuen Drama at Bloomsbury Publishing and Editorial Manager at LID Publishing. In August 2020, I decided to make the move to freelance editing. I especially love working with first-time and self-publishing authors as it is such a pleasure to help authors bring their books into the world.

In February 2021, my debut novel, The Essence of an Hour, was published by Yorkshire-based Valley Press. Set in the 1940s, the novel is a coming-of-age story about an ill-fated summer romance and examines issues relevant to today such as sexual double-standards and consent.

Having worked in the publishing industry for over five years, it is a dream come true to be an author now as well!
