Alumni - Sabrina Gutierrez, BA Publishing Media

Since graduating, publishing has taken me around the world. I have worked at a children’s book publisher in Spain and my current role as Executive Communications Liaison for Ecovis is based in Mexico. In this role I manage, edit and design our bimonthly magazine.

As the five-year anniversary of my graduation approaches, I have been reflecting on my time spent at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing. The most important piece of advice I would extend to anyone thinking about studying Publishing at Oxford Brookes is to go for it and take full advantage of every opportunity.

This degree is top-tier, and you can only expect to get as much out of it as you put into it. Our class had students starting their own publishing house, publishing a quirky student-friendly travel guide to Oxford, managing the university’s independent newspaper, you name it!

Do take in:

• the projects
• the internship opportunities
• the advice from lecturers
• the events and book fairs
• the open lectures
• the exclusive publishing society events
• the modules.

By doing so, you will not only leave the university with a vast array of tools at your disposal, but you will have evidence of your experience, wonderful connections, friends for life, and quality research-based knowledge to take the industry forward. This is a fascinating degree, at a world-class institute, in magical Oxford. I could not speak more highly of my time spent here, and seeing OICP at the top of the charts in ‘The Guardian’s 2020 university league table for journalism, publishing and communication’ is extremely satisfying.
I applaud the faculty for always making the time to speak with students. Their energy at every lecture, every seminar, and any gathering was infectious. I highly recommend this degree - you will not find anything like it.
