Alumni - Emma Horton, BA Publishing

Emma was recently interviewed by the University for an alumni profile.

After graduating from Brookes what were the next steps for your career, and where are you working now?

During my final year at Brookes I knew that I wanted to work in marketing so began applying for jobs in this area. A few months after graduating, I began working as a Marketing Coordinator at Routledge, Taylor & Francis, an academic publisher based in Oxfordshire, where I was able to apply a lot of what I had learnt during my course...

I have now been working there for more than four year in various marketing roles. I am currently a Senior Marketing Executive promoting the company’s politics and international relations journals. I have also completed a CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing

What made you choose Oxford Brookes as a place to study?

I had always enjoyed studying English but was looking for a more vocational degree course. Publishing was suggested by an Oxford Brookes representative attending an event at my school. After attending an open day at Brookes, where I met some of the teaching staff and experienced the welcoming atmosphere of the department, I knew it was the right course for me.

What did you think of the publishing course?

I really enjoyed the course and the variety of learning about all aspects of the publishing industry. I was able to tailor my modules to the areas that interested me the most, which also helped me to identify what I wanted to do after graduating.

So far what have been the most challenging moments?

Publishing can be a difficult industry to get into with lots of competition for entry level positions. It was challenging to stay positive after a few rejections for job roles but I was persistent and able to get the job that was right for me.

What have been the best moments so far?

Getting my first job in publishing was a great moment. I have also been able to travel as part of my job and have been to some fantastic places, such as New York, New Orleans, Barcelona and Rome.
