Alumni - David Vince, BA Publishing

Studying at Oxford Brookes provided me with a valuable overview of the publishing process. The syllabus was varied and enabled me to explore the different facets of the publishing industry such as design, rights, editorial, production and marketing. Although the course is highly practical in nature, it isn't at the expense of the ‘theoretical'. I graduated in 2004 feeling that I was aware of how the industry had evolved and, at the same time, equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills in order to work in today's industry. ...

The publishing faculty all maintain close relationships with the industry, and Oxford Brookes enjoys an excellent reputation. I gained my first job through the dedicated job section of the publishing department's website, which led to a variety of roles over the next three and a half years for an independent academic publisher.

I now work for The Open University, identifying opportunities for collaboration between faculty and commercial publishers. A typical day is varied, which makes it hugely rewarding, and can involve liaising with academic staff, publishers, editors, rights staff and print buyers. If I had my time again, Oxford Brookes would definitely be my first choice.
