UKti trade mission to China

Oxford Centre for Publishing Consultancy and Research

Oxford Brookes and UK Trade & Investment Team South East funded and promoted a visit by eight local companies to the prestigious Beijing Book Fair in China.

Eight publishers from the Oxfordshire area travelled to China from 27 August to 4 September 2005. Beginning with two days in Shanghai, the mission transferred to Beijing for the Beijing International Book Fair. Meetings were arranged by the Oxford Centre for Publishing Consultancy and Research, Oxford Brookes University, represented by Adrian Bullock and Angus Phillips.

The mission met with Chinese publishers, including the Shandong Publishing Group, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and World Publishing Corporation, as well as government officials at the General Administration of Press and Publication. Official events such as the British Council and UKti reception were included in the visit. Each publisher had a range of appointments at the Book Fair.

A briefing day for the companies in Oxford had covered how to sell Intellectual Property in China, the Chinese publishing market, and relevant cultural information.

The companies represented on the mission were Gresham Books, Berg Publishers, Felicity Bryan literary agency, Speechmark Publishing, Alden Press, Radcliffe Publishing, Usborne Publishing and Summertown Publishing.

The Oxford Centre for Publishing Consultancy and Research has excellent experience of the Chinese market and many useful contacts in the industry in China. There are many Oxford Brookes alumni students in Chinese publishing and the Centre has run highly successful courses for Chinese publishers.
