Staff training is the way forward in the Economic downturn!

The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies is pleased to announce its programme of short courses to be held in January 2009.

In October of this year, captains of industry, including CBI director General Richard Lambert and Marks & Spencer chairman Sir Stuart Rose, published an open letter in which they stated that despite the current economic downturn, cutting training budgets would be a false economy. The letter went on to say, "investing now in building new skills will put us in the strongest position as the economy recovers. From our experience in previous downturns, it was the businesses that did invest in their staff that saw the most dynamic recovery."

We are offering *InDesign*, at a level for those new to the software or for those who already have quite a lot of knowledge but who wish to expand their skills.

Our *proofreading* course is aimed at those for whom proofreading is not their daily job, but who have responsibility for the output or checking of any material, for whatever purpose.

For those who need to grasp the basics of publishing finance, our *Introduction to Finance* course will include information about the terminology as well as budgeting, forecasting, profit and loss and how to understand accounts and balance sheets.

Our ever popular *Copyright, contracts and rights: the basics* is running again, this covers the facts about copyright, licenses and agreements, rights and permissions and will include an introduction to other legal issues and current legislation. A new course, exploring and explaining the world of digital negotiations, entitled *Digital Negotiations, Licensing and Selling* is for those who need to understand how digital negotiations affect not only their own position as content providers or seekers, but also the publishing industry in general.

For those who wish to make their own websites, our *Dreamweaver* course is for you. The course will aim to explain the jargon, technology and standards involved in publishing for the web and will provide hands on experience in building web pages with Dreamweaver CS3. For those people who write for the internet, our half-day course, *Writing for the Web*, provides guidance for improving text for the Internet. Halfway between paper print and television, websites require a very different style from printed media. This course will help you adjust your style for this delivery.

Finally, whilst many people use *Microsoft Excel* frequently, do they use it fully? Our half day course will introduce delegates to using it for databases and as an additional topic, how to set up and use formulae, the ‘real workhorse of the worksheet'.

So why not start the New Year with an update of your skills? For further details, please don't hesitate to contact Caroline Hamilton, Centre Manager, Creative Industries .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
