Slovenian Book Fair, Ljubljana

Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, spoke at the Slovenian Book Fair in Ljubljana on 28 November 2007. He gave a lecture entitled, ‘Does the Book have a Future?’ He also gave a lecture on journals publishing at the University of Ljubljana.

Fellow speakers at the Book Fair included André Schiffrin, author of The Business of Books, Adrian van der Weel from Leiden University, Steffen Hillebrecht from HTWK Leipzig, and Anne Miller from the National Centre for the Book in Paris.

Over one hundred publishers exhibited at the 23rd Fair held at Cankerjev dom. Sponsorship of the Fair allowed free entrance for visitors. Around 4,000 titles are published each year in Slovenia, and total book production is 4 million copies. Paperbacks are growing in popularity but the main market for books, including library sales, is in hardback.
