Publishing stand at Careersfest 2016 wins ‘Best Exhibit’ award!

On just our second attendance at the event, the 'Publishing' stand from the Oxfordshire Publishing Group at the 2016 Careersfest, held at the Mini Plant, Oxford on 19-20 January, won the 'Best Exhibit' award.

The event provides careers information, advice and guidance for local school students, employers and training providers.

The key theme this year was ‘Opportunities to Inspire’, the idea being to inspire young people to see their potential and set ambitions for the world of work by connecting schools to the knowledge, expertise and the experience of volunteers from business.  Over 1,600 schoolchildren from 15 local schools attended the event.

The 'Publishing' stand was a lively presentation of books and other material suitable for the 14-18 age group, along with some exciting ebooks which allowed pupils the opportunity to see how publishing is not just about producing printed books!  Over the two days, more than 20 staff from local publishing companies did shifts on the stand and their enthusiasm and excitement was palpable.  Almost no one who came to the stand had any idea about what publishing was all about - they all think it's something to do with 'writing books' - and not a single student had thought about publishing as a career.  But once they heard about the breadth of opportunities that are available in the industry, so many got quite excited and took away material.  Maybe it's planted a seed in some young minds!
