The Publishers Association’s (PA) Textbook Action Group has agreed to provide funding for the establishment of a research network by the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies (Adrian Bullock and Dr Jane Potter) into what motivates students today and, in particular, how they use textbooks and other learning resources, such as the internet, on-line journals, and VLEs, when they study. The purpose of this research is to continue and broaden the work on student learning and textbooks recently completed by the Publishers Association.

The first step is to establish a research network, by means of a moderated website, to foster discussion between university lecturers, publishers, and textbook authors, and to encourage debate around the issues of creating and using learning resources in higher education.

This will be followed by an article on the results of the PA research due to appear in the September issue of the Brookes ejournal of Learning and Teaching

A symposium on student motivation, learning, and the use of learning resources is planned for late Autumn 2006 at Oxford Brookes.
