OICPS at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2015

In April 2015 eighteen students from the Master’s in Publishing programmes visited the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. They had appointments with publishers at the Fair and were able to enjoy the atmosphere of the pre-eminent rights fair in children’s publishing.

Kelsi Farrington writes about her experience of presenting her project proposal at the Digital Café:

‘On Wednesday the 1st of April, at this year's Bologna Children's Book Fair, I presented my Major Project proposal in front of a larger-than-anticipated crowd at the Digital Café - an experience I won't forget any time soon. My idea, to create a collection of fact-based, illustrated ebooks for children in developing countries, was inspired by my 5-month internship at Oxfam International, publishing Open Access research papers from global affiliates, and the combination of my chosen modules at Brookes: Children's Publishing, International Publishing Management and Digital Publishing Strategy. …

Presenting at the Fair has been the highlight of my time at Brookes so far, and quite possibly the best way to suss out whether my idea was feasible or not - in front of an international audience in a foreign country! I was fortunate that there were no catastrophic technical mishaps, and given the receptive audience, I would honestly say that the experience and the presentation could not have gone smoother. I presented my idea, the audience applauded and next thing I knew I was discussing the progression of my digital project with a representative of an international publishing company (who I had hinted at wanting to collaborate with). I would definitely recommend any student with a digital idea they feel strongly about to take the opportunity to present at the Digital Café in Bologna. I also would like to say a huge thanks to friends who listened to me rehearse (over and over again), to a fantastic translator, and to my tutor, Beverley Tarquini, who was incredibly encouraging and supportive from start to finish.'
