Leys News visits Oxford Brookes

On 23rd February representatives from Leys News, the community newspaper for local residents in Blackbird Leys and Greater Leys, visited Oxford Brookes University and participated in workshops organised by the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies.

The group which included the Editor, Office Manager and 6 community journalists from Leys News enjoyed a practical session led by Senior Lecturer Sally Hughes, on using InDesign for the design and layout of publications. This workshop was followed by a seminar from Leander Reeves, Senior Lecturer, on magazine publishing and in particular the recent launch of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies' student-created magazine Digs.

Leys News Office Manager, Anna Pavelin, said about the workshops: ‘Everyone had a good time and it's given us some great inspiration. The participants said they didn't want the publishing workshop to end and could have spent many more hours learning InDesign and talking to Leander about magazines and newspapers!'

The journalists' report of their visit to Oxford Brookes University will appear in the next issue of Leys News: further information can be found here: http://www.leysnews.co.uk/

The visit was supported by the Learning Communities Initiative, a major regeneration and social inclusion project led by Oxfordshire County Council and funded by the South East England Development Agency.
