Florence Summer School

During two weeks in May, OICPS students and staff took part in a summer school at the Villa Finaly, the University of Paris’s exquisite base in Florence.

Colleagues and students from our partner institutions of Leipzig, Ljubljana, Milan, and Paris joined together to consider the theme of Children’s Publishing through a series of lectures, seminar/workshops and new product presentations.  There were visits to the art publisher Mandragora and various Florentine bookshops to gather first-hand knowledge about the efforts to promote reading and books.  The question of e-books was high on the agenda of topical issues and a lexicon of publishing terms was created.   Student groups were given the task in week two of creating a new children’s series, complete with marketing plans.  A truly fascinating range of creative titles was the result. It was not all work, though.  Students and staff were also able to sample the delights of Florence from gelato to limonchello, from outdoor markets to osterias, from magnificent churches to inspiring museums.  Many friendships were formed, and for both students and staff the experience of working with and learning from our European colleagues was invaluable.
