Digs magazine launched!

Launched in the autumn of 2008, Digs is a magazine about student life in Oxford which is freely distributed to students at Oxford Brookes and Oxford Universities. The magazine started out as coursework for a first-year undergraduate project at Oxford Brookes, in the module Introduction to Magazine Publishing.

Leander Reeves, Senior Lecturer, writes of the project:

We try to anchor the student projects within real world parameters. This is good practice for the students and helps them critically evaluate their decisions based on sound professional publishing concepts. So, with this in mind, we were delighted that our publishing students have been successful in identifying a prominent gap in the Oxford student magazine market - and even more delighted when the first issue came back from the printer!

My role has been primarily that of consultant to the Digs team with occasional cheerleading and it has been a genuine pleasure. It has also been very rewarding to see the teaching from the publishing modules present in the many business, marketing, design and editorial decisions this group has had to make over the last few months. But as much we as staff take pride in the grounding and support we provide our students, the success of Digs is very much down to the outstanding calibre of our students here in the Publishing department.

Michelle Ravey, a third-year Publishing student, worked on the design of the magazine:

Having created Digs as a first-year project it has been an incredible two-year journey in which, with the support of the publishing department, we now have a published magazine. Digs has evolved into a business which incorporates all aspects of publishing taught by the Oxford Brookes publishing department. It has been an amazing experience putting into practice all the theory we have been taught.
