Costa Book Awards 2017
Sarah Franklin, Senior Lecturer at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, attended the 2017 Costa Book Awards on 30 January 2018, as part of the judging panel for the Costa Short Story Award, which was announced on the evening. The five short story award judges had selected a shortlist of three, which were posted to the Costa Book Award website along with audio versions of the stories. The general public then chose a winning story from the three entries. This year's winner was Luan Goldie for her story 'Two Steak Bakes and Two Chelsea Buns'. Luann's first novel is currently out on submission with publishers, so this was a very timely as well as richly deserved win.
The winner of the overall Costa Book Award for 2017 was also announced at the event. This was awarded posthumously to Helen Dunmore for her poetry collection, Inside the Wave. Helen's two adult children collected the prize on her behalf and it's safe to say there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
The event was huge fun, as ever, with lots of discussion and huge goodwill towards the category winners in what was agreed to have been a really strong year for the prize.
