Building a Publishing Career in Europe

‘Building a Publishing Career in Europe’ was the topic of the Publishing Seminar this week. Participants on the panel were publishing educators from around Europe: Ernst-Peter Biesalski from Leipzig, Germany, Michel Bruillon from Paris, France, Miha Kovac from Ljubljana, Slovenia, and our own Sue Pandit. The panel, chaired by Kelvin Smith, compared the similarities and differences in European university publishing courses. The speakers discussed who their students are, and what they study, how their courses cover different parts of the book chain, and how students can and do develop their careers in a national, European and international context. There were many keen questions and comments from the student audience. The seminar coincided with the visit to Oxford of partners in the development of a European Master in Publishing (see European MA in Publishing, posted on 18 October 2004).
