British Book Design and Production Awards 2012

The British Book Design and Production Awards took place on 20 November 2012 at a glittering event at the prestigious Grange St Paul's Hotel. The evening’s speaker was journalist, editor, media commentator and novelist, Eve Pollard, who has been dubbed ‘the first lady of Fleet Street’.

As one of the most prestigious and popular literary events of the year, the British Book Design and Production Awards recognize the excellence of the British book design and production industry by celebrating the year’s best books. The awards are designed to represent everything that is best in British book design and are seen as the flagship event in the industry’s year. The event is supported by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), Oxford Brookes University, and the Publishers Association.

The Book of the Year, which was chosen from the winners of all the other categories, went to Eat London 2, published by Octopus. The judges agreed that attention to detail in design, image selection and production resulted in a superlative book that redefines quality and imagination in that well-trodden genre, the consumer restaurant guide. Layout is consistent but highly flexible throughout this title, which pushes print disciplines to the limit for a mass-market book. The skills of both the designers and the printers are vividly evident in this worthy overall winner.

Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, presented the award for Brand/Series identity, sponsored by Oxford Brookes, to Laurence King Publishing for their series 100 Ideas.

A panel consisting of industry experts from the design, publishing and production industries met over two days at Oxford Brookes University to select the shortlisted entries and winners.
