Women in Publishing - Blackwell’s in Oxford

To celebrate International Women's Day, Blackwell's is hosting a panel discussion about Women in Publishing.

Taking Place: Blackwell's Bookshop 50 Broad Street Oxford

Joining the discussion will be And Other Stories' Nichola Smalley, author Alia Trabucco Zerán, and author and Senior Lecturer at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing, Sarah Franklin.

Sarah Franklin worked for literary agents and publishing houses such as Pearson Education in the UK, the US, and Ireland. She has worked across fiction and non-fiction for the trade and academic markets, and her sales and marketing work has taken her from Alaska to Australia. Editorially, she's worked with bestsellers to first time self-publishing authors. Sarah writes regular book review columns and freelance articles for publications such as the Guardian, Sunday Express, Seattle Times and Psychologies magazine. Her debut novel, Shelter, has been a top seller at Blackwell's bookshop and nationally.

And Other Stories are a literary publishing house that works on the principle that great new books will be heard about and read thanks to the combined intelligence of a number of people: editors, readers, translators, critics, literary promoters and academics. In 2015, in response to a challenge issued to the publishing industry by Kamila Shamsie, And Other Stories declared that in 2018 it would only publish women authors. This is scheduled to coincide with the 100th anniversry of partial women's enfranchisement in the UK. And Other Stories is the only publishing house to have taken up the challenge to make 2018 a Year of Publishing Women.

Alia Trabucco Zerán is one of these authors, whose novel The Remainder will be published in the autumn.
