Try Programming

Emma Barnes, CEO Bibliocloud

Taking Place: The Tonge Publishing IT Suite, Oxford Brookes University

Frustrated by watching other people become more technically literate than you? Ever wanted to try your hand at real programming? This course is designed to show you that modern programming doesn’t have to be a frightening leap into the dark. It teaches you how to develop and deploy a real web application with Ruby on Rails, the open-source web framework that powers top websites such as Twitter, Hulu, and Yellow Pages.

Taught by the team who developed the Futurebook award-winning Bibliocloud.com, this hands-on course will give you the opportunity to create your own web application for storing and displaying book metadata. You'll be guided step-by-step, learning important concepts and techniques through demonstration and practice.  We will assume that you have no prior experience of programming, although you should be familiar with what HTML is and unfazed by using a computer. By the end of the course you will know how to structure and write your own Ruby on Rails app, and how to publish it to the web.

“Emma is a very engaging and personable speaker and tutor. As a guest lecturer on the MA Publishing course, her sessions were insightful, inspiring and totally demystified coding.”  Donna Hutchinson, MA Digital Publishing graduate, Oxford Brookes University

Audience: Everyone with an interest in exploring programming. Delegates will be comfortable using a computer, but have only rudimentary understanding or recognition of some commonplace languages such as HTML.
