‘Small Cog to Girl Friday’: Clare Christian, Managing and Publishing Director, The Friday Project

Publishing Research Seminar Series

Taking Place: Buckley BG10/11 in Semester 1 2007

Where do you see your publishing career?

Conventional mainstream publishing: big hitters; massive offices; global recognition; company hierarchies; small cog; always having a boss.  Exciting - but frustrating?

Setting up your company: entrepreneurial; developing new business models; being your own boss; long lunches on Fridays; ultimate responsibility. Exhilarating - but risky?

Clare Christian has experienced both. First, by working for several large corporate publishing companies, and then by establishing her own company, The Friday Project. In this talk, she will look at the pros and cons of both environments; explain the excitement of setting up a new business; and explore the ways in which The Friday Project intersects with new media.

Clare Christian has worked for a number of large publishing companies before leaving to found The Friday Project in 2005.  The Friday Project (http://www.thefridayproject.co.uk/) is an innovative company which develops fiction and non-fiction books from websites, property and content.  In 2007, Clare was named British Council & London Book Fair UK Young Publisher of the Year. Her Girl Friday blog is available at http://tfpsgirlfriday.blogspot.com/ .
