Children’s Publishing Around the World - London Book Fair Seminar, 13th April

London Book Fair, Earls Court, London

Wednesday 13 April 2011

14:30, Children's Theatre, Earls Court 1

Taking Place: London Book Fair

Once upon a time, children’s publishing was an ugly duckling. Now, with the sales of children’s bestsellers matching those of titles aimed at adults, and new technology inviting children to engage in different ways with stories, the duckling-become-swan holds its head high, and publishers are vying with each other to sign up and keep key authors.

Three speakers, representing different parts of the world and different roles within the exciting field of children’s publishing, will discuss what’s happening and what the future may hold. Let’s hope it’s not tears before bedtime!

The seminar will be chaired by Sheila Lambie from the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies at Oxford Brookes University.
Sheila is Senior Lecturer in Marketing at OICPS. Before she joined OICPS she was Head of Reference Marketing, Academic Division at Oxford University Press and has held posts as Sales and Marketing Director at Helicon Publishing, ICC, and Longman. She is actively engaged in training publishers from around the world; her recent consultancy work has included directing three British Council-led seminars held in U.A.E., South Africa, Syria, India and Russia, focusing on preparing publishers for the London Book Fair.

The speakers will include:

Kate Wilson
Born in 1964 in Edinburgh, Kate has 25 years’ publishing experience before founding Nosy Crow. Nosy Crow is a new, independent children’s publishing company which published its first books and apps early in 2011. She started her career as a rights seller for Faber and Faber and something that subsequently became Egmont Children’s Books, before becoming MD of Macmillan Children’s Books, Group MD of Scholastic UK Ltd, and then (briefly!) CEO of Headline. She cares about good books, design, literacy and technology.

Valentina Letunova works as an editor at Samokat Publishing House in Moscow (www.samokatbook.ru/en/). She is a graduate of the Russian State University for Humanities and is experienced in translating and editing books for children and young adults.
