The Nielsen BookInsights Conference

by Christian Wagner

I had a great day at the British Library in London on Wednesday 23 March, 2016. The Nielsen BookInsights Conference took a closer look at the behaviour and attitudes of book consumers and presented current trends to attendees of all kind, such as publishers, booksellers, photographers and students.

It was gripping to see a professor of evolutional development biology using research techniques honed in the natural sciences and the music world to extract meaning from book content in order to aid discoverability and to develop an approach to forecast a title's success before it's even published. The given overviews of the global book market and the UK children's and E-Book market will also help me in practice, working on my assignments at university and with applying for jobs later. The final event of the conference was a CEO panel, consisting of senior British publishers and booksellers that provided a unique insight into their present thoughts and future strategies. All these inspiring new prospects, a lot of interesting conversations with industry insiders and last but not least good food, made the day a special experience.
