Publishing (OICPS) to be at the London Book Fair again
Following the success of last year's inaugural vist to the London Book Fair, the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies is to have a stand at this year's fair. Publishing student sets up freelance company
Oxford Brookes has inspired at least one of its MA Publishing students to go it alone and enter the freelance world of publishing. Here is the story of Kumquat, told by Emma Anderson...The world has Orange, Apple, Pineapple and now, Brookes has inspired the creation of Kumquat - a name chosen after half an hour of random word calling out amongst the smaller members of my "team" and, I hasten to add, despite the advice of business analysts saying "Never name a company after a fruit" - cf. various legal wranglings.

New Delhi World Book Fair 2008
The 18th World Book Fair was held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 2 to 10 February 2008. There were more than 1300 exhibitors from 22 different countries, and the guest country was Russia.The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, with support from UK Trade and Investment, led a delegation of ten UK companies on a trade mission to India to coincide with the Fair. Led by Adrian Bullock and Angus Phillips from the Centre, the mission first visited Chennai, where meetings were held with the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI). Moving on to Delhi, the publishers visited the World Book Fair and a networking reception was held at the High Commission.

The annual OPuS networking evening with an Indian Theme
MA Publishing students and OICPS staff joined OPuS members and many Oxford publishers for a very enjoyable evening at the Blake Lapthorn Tarlo Lyons, Seacourt Tower in Oxford.
The evening included delicious Indian food and very atmospheric music with Flute and Tabla (Nim Pathy - flute, Prashant Potnis - tabla). Several MA students gave speeches about their time in Oxford and reasons for coming to Brookes to study publishing. Sabita Banerji aslo read an extract from her book, Kundalini Awake (available on http://www.lulu.com)

Teaching Book History to Undergraduates
Representatives from the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies contributed to the one-day symposium on Teaching the History of the Book to Undergraduates at the Institute of English Studies at the University of London recently.
The symposium, which focused on how book history is taught at undergraduate level, featured Brookes student Ashley Hayden and Publishing staff member Claire Squires. Ashley spoke on a panel of students about her experience of being taught book history via the modules Print and Society and Fiction and the Culture of Publishing, as well as her dissertation work. Claire used the Fiction and the Culture of Publishing module as a case study to discuss the place of publishing history and the 'cultural' strand within the professionally-oriented BA in Publishing course.Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 11 Dec 2007 around 8pm

British Book Design and Production Awards 2007
Over three hundred publishers, printers and their guests attended the British Book Design and Production Awards Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the British Printing Industries Federation, Oxford Brookes University, and the Publishers Association on 13 November 2007 at the Millennium Mayfair Hotel. The guest speaker was Sandy Toksvig.

Judging a Book by Its Cover
Angus Phillips and Claire Squires of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies have recently published chapters in a new book.Judging a Book by Its Cover: Fans, Publishers, Designers, and the Marketing of Fiction (Ashgate), edited by Nicole Matthews and Nickianne Moody, includes the articles 'How Books are Positioned in the Market: Reading the Cover' by Phillips, and 'Book Marketing and the Booker Prize' by Squires, alongside other chapters on Penguin Books, the interactions between film and books, and the use of covers in Internet bookstores.

Slovenian Book Fair, Ljubljana
Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, spoke at the Slovenian Book Fair in Ljubljana on 28 November 2007. He gave a lecture entitled, ‘Does the Book have a Future?’ He also gave a lecture on journals publishing at the University of Ljubljana.

Children’s Publishing
On Thursday 22 November, the Oxford Publishing Society (OpuS) held an event at Oxford Brookes University entitled ‘Children's Publishing: A success story'. The speakers were Catherine Clarke, literary agent at the Felicity Bryan Agency, Liz Cross, Children's Publisher at Oxford University Press, and Julia Golding, author of numerous children's books including The Diamond of Drury Lane. The event was chaired by Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies.

Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies lecturer Claire Squires featured on this week's BBC Radio 4 Open Book programme.Claire discussed 'the dark arts of marketing' with presenter Mariella Frostrup and critic John Sutherland, which her new book Marketing Literature: The Making of Contemporary Writing in Britain analyses in detail.
