Oxford Literary Festival - The Future of Publishing
Details have been announced for this event at the Oxford Literary Festival, presented by the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies:
The Future of Publishing
4.00 pm, Saturday 29 March 2014
The familiar world of the book is facing some key challenges. These include the decline of bookselling on the high street, the growth in the sales of ebooks, and competition from other media. There is continued experimentation around the book in digital form, exploring non-linear narratives and the use of multimedia. Meanwhile, for authors there are many new routes available for finding a readership, including self-publishing or using crowdfunding to finance publication. Will traditional publishing survive in this environment? Why do authors still need publishers? Should readers have a greater say in what is published? Our expert panel of Nigel Newton, Anthony Cheetham, Tim Waterstone, and Richard Ovenden considers these and other questions.
The event is chaired by Angus Phillips, Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies.

The Successful Publishing Fusion Workshop
The Publishing Fusion Workshop was run in early January by the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, supported by Creative Skillset. The Workshop took place in Oxford when the city was flooded, roads were closed and travelling times were twice what they should have been. Not an auspicious start to the three days! And yet the Workshop became a place of genuine excitement and creativity. The Workshop was focused on how publishing needs everyone to have creative, digital and entrepreneurial skills and that whilst many people going into the industry have one or two of these, few have all three. The idea was to develop delegates' skills in a way that would allow them to think about their work in new ways and take back practical ideas to their work place.
Inspiration and invention was the name of the game!

Publishing Fusion 2014
Places are going fast on the Publishing Fusion Workshop which takes place in Oxford from 8-10 January and on 11 March in 2014.
The Workshop is set to be an exciting few days of learning and discussion on subjects such as:
- creating ideas
- why business models matter
- building digital brands
- creativity in publishing

From Bologna to Borneo – writing successes
Judith Paskin is a student on the MA Publishing at Oxford Brookes.
When I began the MA Publishing course as a part-time mature student in September 2012, I knew it would offer me a valuable opportunity to embark on a new career. At the same time I hoped I would still be able to make use of the skills from my previous job as a broadcast journalist with the BBC. What I did not anticipate was the chance to combine both skill-sets during a rather successful summer break this year.
One of the wonderful things about this course is the stream of opportunities for students to explore while they study. As with many things in life, often one path leads to another quite unexpected one. In particular, the Children’s Publishing module gave me the chance not only to explore my interests in that field, but to have my work published in the publishing journal Logos. My article, ‘Digital Publishing in Children’s Literature: A hindrance or a help to reluctant readers’, appeared in the October issue.

British Book Design and Production Awards 2013
The British Book Design and Production Awards took place on 4 November 2013 at a glittering event at the prestigious Grange St Paul's Hotel. The speaker was journalist, author, comedian and producer, Will Gompertz, who kept the audience entertained throughout the night.
As one of the most prestigious and popular literary events of the year, the British Book Design and Production Awards recognize the excellence of the British book design and production industry by celebrating the year’s best books. The awards are designed to represent everything that is best in British book design and are seen as the flagship event in the industry’s year. The event is supported by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), Oxford Brookes University, and the Publishers Association.

Date for next International Publishing Summer School 2014
After the success of our first International Publishing Summer School in July 2013, we are now able to announce the date of the 2014 conference. This will take place from 7th-18th July 2014, once again in the splendid surroundings of Headington Hill Hall at Oxford Brookes University.
We had uniformly enthusiastic feedback from last year's delegates and we expect the 2014 Summer School to be just as good, with participants from all round the world, and a stellar line up of lecturers from OICPS and industry. As well as hearing about real-life cases studies, there will the opportunity to learn from hands-on exercises and workshops, and to join in some interesting industry visits.
Accommodation is en-suite and all meals are included in the package (other than during the middle weekend when you are free to make your own plans). There will also be a conference dinner with an after-dinner speaker in the second week.

3rd Sino-UK Publishing Forum, Beijing
In partnership with Peking University and the Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies (OICPS) recently held a forum on the theme of cross-cultural communication in the digital age. Taking place in China on the 28 August 2013, during the Beijing International Book Fair, the forum brought together a range of speakers and participants from both industry and academia. Over 150 people attended, including alumni from Oxford Brookes, and there were themed discussions around the topics of personnel, content, and channels within publishing.

Quick Stories – original stories to enjoy in 5 minutes
Inspired by living in a fast paced world, former MA Publishing student Antonia Eraud has collaborated with fellow writers to produce Quick Stories Volume One, a collection of short short stories designed to be read on the tube, train, waiting for that friend who is always late, under a tree in the park on a rare sunny day … anywhere you’ve got five minutes to spare.
The scintillating and eclectic collection of stories includes tales of lost innocence, stolen kisses, awkward dinner parties, nutty professors and much more besides. The book is the first volume in a series. Over time, the group will publish more and more volumes of Quick Stories, all very affordable and available to download from Amazon. Success for Publishing lecturers at SU Teaching Awards
There was success for lecturers from Publishing at the annual Teaching Awards organized by the Students’ Union at Oxford Brookes, held on Tuesday 30 April 2013. Such awards are now run at almost every students’ union in the UK, aimed at rewarding best practice for teaching and dedication to higher education.

London Book Fair 2013
Students and staff from the Centre (OICPS) were busy throughout the London Book Fair, held at Earls Court from the 15th to 17th April 2013. We had our own stand from which we marketed our degree programmes, staff publications, research and consultancy, and our July summer school. Over 40 students helped out with the running of the Fair, including manning the seminar rooms, the literary café, and the translation centre; and two students helped on the Frankfurt Book Fair stand.
