Rewriting and Substantive Editing
Andrew Steeds
Taking Place: The King’s Centre, Osney, Oxford
Increasingly, texts pose greater challenges than editors would expect to find in their standard copy-editing activity. How do you make a case for more-substantive editing than had been envisaged for a text? How do you set about reworking a text that doesn’t work in its submitted form? And how do you do so while keeping the person or people responsible for writing it on board? These, and other, questions are explored in Rewriting and Substantive Editing, a training course that presents ideas and strategies for making the process of rewriting less daunting than it can at times appear to be.
Course outline:
- Identifying problems and considering solutions
- When sentence construction breeds confusion
- Adjusting the level of a piece of rewriting
- Clarifying the message of a text
- Maintaining the author's voice
- The pros and cons of bullet points
- Approaches to cutting text
- Editing text written in English as a second language
- Considering jargon and specialist vocabulary

Try Programming
Emma Barnes, CEO Bibliocloud
Taking Place: The Tonge Publishing IT Suite, Oxford Brookes University
Frustrated by watching other people become more technically literate than you? Ever wanted to try your hand at real programming? This course is designed to show you that modern programming doesn’t have to be a frightening leap into the dark. It teaches you how to develop and deploy a real web application with Ruby on Rails, the open-source web framework that powers top websites such as Twitter, Hulu, and Yellow Pages.
Taught by the team who developed the Futurebook award-winning Bibliocloud.com, this hands-on course will give you the opportunity to create your own web application for storing and displaying book metadata. You'll be guided step-by-step, learning important concepts and techniques through demonstration and practice. We will assume that you have no prior experience of programming, although you should be familiar with what HTML is and unfazed by using a computer. By the end of the course you will know how to structure and write your own Ruby on Rails app, and how to publish it to the web.

Finance Refresher
Building on What You Know (and What You Don’t!)
Philip Shaw and Helena Markou
Taking Place: The King’s Centre, Osney, Oxford
Many people working in publishing have budget responsibilities, whether in editorial, marketing, or production departments. But most publishers have little or no financial training and simply learn what they need to know on the job. The result is that they might have a good understanding of their own projects, but have no real idea of how this fits into the bigger picture of their company’s finances.
The Finance Refresher course is for anyone with financial responsibility who wants to feel more confident about the financial work they do and who wants a better understanding of balance sheets, P&Ls, and the financial implications of their work. It will cover all the principal financial aspects of publishing, including the finance of digital projects, and will answer all those questions publishers don’t want to reveal that they don’t fully understand!
Delegates will gain an understanding of four key areas: business models and the financial principles used in developing a publishing programme; the financial tools commonly used in the management of a publishing business; the interpretation of financial statements; and the valuation of publishing assets.
- Philip Shaw is from Bertoli Mitchell LLP and is also Associate Lecturer, Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies
- Helena Markou is Senior Lecturer, Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies

Copyright Masterclass
Please note the new date.
Simon Littlewood, Joss Saunders, Beverley Tarquini
Taking Place: Four Pillars Hotel, Oxford
Copyright, the bedrock of the publishing industry and of authors’ livelihoods, has never been more under threat in the modern era, and questions are being asked in a range of jurisdictions about whether current frameworks are fit for purpose. Change is already under way, and further change is inevitable. The issues surrounding copyright have never been more complicated and keeping abreast of the latest developments is a challenge for everyone in publishing. At a moment when the new European Commission has ordered a comprehensive review of copyright, this new course addresses that challenge not only from a legal and editorial but also from a commercial point of view, reminding us that copyright and its future are the concern of everyone in the industry.
To reflect this range of perspectives, it will be taught by Joss Saunders, a pre-eminent copyright lawyer, Simon Littlewood, a leading industry practitioner, and Beverley Tarquini, Senior Lecturer at OICPS.
